How to Choose Material of Stainless Steel Railing Tube?

The popularity of stainless steel type is due to the resistive nature of stainless steel to corrosion and its ability to maintain integrity when other metal types would be compromised. Stainless steel tube/pipe is used in several different types of applications. Stainless steel is also less expensive than many other piping options, and can be easily cleaned and sanitized if needed.

Although not visible to the naked eye from stainless steel railing tubes, the variance between different grades of stainless steel lies in its composition. As steel is naturally corrosive, different elements are added to make it stainless.

How to Choose Material of Stainless Steel Railing Tubes? Aisi304, 316 or duplex 2205?

The industry standard for interior handrail use is a 304 grade stainless steel. In comparison 316 stainless steel contains 2% molybdenum to make the material more resistant to corrosion caused cracks, tension and pitting.

For outdoor use we normally recommend 316 grade stainless steel as the tougher composition gives better resistance in these harsh environments.

For swimming pools, coastal areas, EASTEEL can provide a wide range of stainless steel railing tubes in 2205 grade.

304 and 304L stainless steel railing tubes
For stainless steel tubes/pipes to be classified as 304 type stainless steel it must have a carbon rating of .08 per cent or less. The 304 stainless steel type is used for general corrosive resistance. It is approved for uses below 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Using the 304 type of stainless steel at levels above this may result in early failure at the welded joints due to carbide precipitation. This type of stainless steel is commonly used in chemical plants, refineries and food processing locations. Stainless steel 304L has a carbon rating of .03 per cent or less. The reduced carbon rating of 304L allows it to be used in circumstances where the stainless steel pipes will be welded in corrosive conditions. The 304L type of stainless steel isn’t recommended for use at temperatures above 800 degrees Fahrenheit due to the potential of the risk of compromised integrity.

    316L stainless railing tubes
The 316L type of stainless steel as a carbon rating of .03 per cent or less. The properties of the 316L allow it to be used in welded pipe assemblies without requiring a heat treat

Which SS Grade is Best for Railing Fittings?

Stainless Steel grade 304 may be the best choice for interior and exterior railing system designs-especially if the application is away from large amounts of saltwater and is not exposed to extreme conditions. Although 304 stainless steel is usually used for indoor applications, it is also suitable for protected outdoor applications.

Grade 304 stainless steel can be utilized in indoor as well as outdoor applications performs where conditions are not overly harsh or extreme, or where the railing system is protected from the environment.

For swimming pool fencing or railing system near coastal areas, grade 316 or duplex 2205 stainless steel can give better resistance in these harsh environments.

Whether you 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel for your railing system, consider your application and the total budge when deciding which material to use. Grade 316 stainless steel is more expensive than 304 stainless steel. Grade 316 stainless steel contains more nickel which makes it corrosion resistant to rust.
